Feel-good grub and good times….
Completing JB’s downtown hip café-bar trifecta (That’s Café and Roost) is Eats & Beats. Opened in April 2010 by Kevin of JB DJ crew Kool Balls and Longan and his other half Yuet Lin, Eats & Beats is one part record store, one part sandwich bar, and full-fledged no frills, no ‘tudes kind of place.

Kevin’s vinyl collection (some personally autographed by the artist) are displayed on shelves, hung from walls and preserved in frames. Party snaps of the KBnL crew and its extended family on the wall are a reminder of good times, while band posters and books on music and photography and freeform graffiti add to the venue. Don’t just stare though. A Sleeveface.com inspired wall serves as encouragement for you to create your own memento. Upstairs, plans are underway to transform the barren space into an event hub and gallery for blogshops.
Clientele Friends and regulars.
Music policy Fun, friendly and down to who’s on decks. Indie, electro, mashups, old school rock and retro get a look in, and you’re welcome to plug in your iPod and press play. With Kevin being part of JB’s Kool Balls & Longan DJ crew and KL’s Twilight Actiongirl fast mates, Eats & Beats is also the focus of occasional gigs like Shhhh… A Not-A-Party Party.
Drinks Tiger is RM10/bottle, RM45/bucket and Heineken is RM12/bottle, RM55/bucket. For the teetotal hot and iced coffee, tea, chocolate, Horlicks, juices and fruit shakes are between RM2.50 and RM6. All prices are nett.
Happy Hours It’s always happy hour here.
Eats Kevin is a commendable cook; his menu is dominated by sandwiches (RM6.50, with choices like corned beef, Cajun chicken, tuna and egg mayo on homemade, wood-fired bread) and toasties (RM5-RM7, served with veggies, baked beans and fries/wedges). New additions to the menu include the spag bol (RM10), chicken pie (RM3.50) and lasagna (RM8). Sweet tooths should try the choc fondue (RM25/2 pax, RM40/4 pax), served with fresh fruits and biscuits. All prices are nett and the menu is pork-free.
Service As chummy as your BFF.
Dress code It’s like a friend’s house party so anything goes – even flip-flops.
