Diplo-matic Stand

DJ extraordinaire Diplo may be heading to KL this month, but before that he has a score to settle with former flame, singer and rapper M.I.A. The pair may have found success after collaborating for M.I.A.’s track ‘Paper Planes’, but their romance disintegrated soon after.

According to him, M.I.A. was ready for retirement and marriage during the album release, but decided to cash in on her new found fame after their song received massive airplay and was featured on soundtracks for Pineapple Express and Oscar-nominee Slumdog Millionaire. Ironically, her 2010 follow-up album Maya, which heavily referenced terrorism in Sri Lanka, didn’t manage to live up to expectations.

In an interview with online magazine WWD, Diplo has said, “You just can’t glamorise terrorism, it’s not cool… you can’t hide behind that shit. But she totally did … And (New York Times writer) Lynn Hirschberg just ate it up. If she didn’t, the critics would have ate her up anyway because the record wasn’t good.” Ouch.
