Def Jam Turns 25

Beastie Boys, Cam’ron, Capone-N-Noreaga, Da 5 Footaz, Dru Hill, Foxy Brown, Funkmaster Flex, Insane Clown Posse, Jay-Z, Montell Jordan, Patti LaBelle, Keith Murray, Onyx, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, Warren G, The Dream, Ghostface Killah, LL Cool J and Rihanna. Those are just some of the names of former and current artists Def Jam Recording. Def Jam is a big deal to hip hop music. Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons founded the label in 1985 and made this sound from the streets of New York to international recognition. It is still one of the biggest labels in the world after 25 years. Represent.

Def Jam is in fact the longest running and most successful hip hop label in the world. Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons were your opposites attract. Rick was a Jewish guy with bear who’s into metal and Russell digs R&B and the females. They shared a dorm room and it was literally full of drugs. They decided to start a record label with money borrowed from Rubin’s parents after getting high out of their minds. They signed Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Public Enemy when no one wanted them. The two fella moved from the dorm room into a coke-fuelled office to sell bazillion records.

Happy 25th Anniversary Def Jam. Let’s go down memory lane, shall we?
