Funny doesn’t even start to describe this movie. Billed as the biggest fake war movie ever, the comedy stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr as a bunch of prima donna actors trying hard to play soldiers. After ballooning costs (and the egos of the pampered cast) threaten to shut down the movie, the director (Steve Coogan) plunges his cast deep into the jungles of Southeast Asia for “increased realism”. Everything goes AWOL when they encounter real bad guys and the result is probably the best action comedy you’ll be watching this year.

The characters themselves are a colourful lot. Robert Downey stands out as the over zealous Australian method actor playing a black American GI. Ben Stiller is in his element as the hilariously pitiful Tugg Speedman, an actor hell-bent on returning to the top after a desperate attempt for an Oscar® backfires. And Jack Black lends weight (pun intended) to the cast as a drug-addict slapstick comedy star out to prove he’s worth more than just fart jokes.

TROPIC THUNDER booms this Thursday (Oct 23rd) in Malaysian cinemas nationwide.
