Chilly Gonzales: Pianist Envy

It seems like everyone and their grandma is a DJ these days. (Sidenote: If you haven’t seen DJ Ruth, youtube it now!) With this comes an onslaught of unoriginal, boring mixtapes, taking up precious space on your already far too full hard drive. Enter Chilly Gonzales. Possibly the best 38.7 megabytes you can put on your itunes.

This Canadian has gone put his thang down, flipped it and reversed it.  What that basically entails is taking hip hop and electro staples and re-doing it with a piano backing and then mixing it all together with tight and fluid arrangement.

A mix more genius than its name, Pianist Envy is the only piano mixtape of its kind. Taking tracks from Beyonce, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and even Daft Punk, Chilly weaves together the contemporary vocals with a beautiful piano melody and rhythm. If you’ve never really identified with 50 Cents strife, wait until you hear it with a hymn-like organ and piano melody.

After past work with Feist and Jamie Lidell, cover work for Daft Punk and Boys Noize and his own work as an electro artist, Pianist Envy is Gonzales latest brainchild. Gonzales shifts from one track to the next with flawless execution. This exhibition of brilliance is sure to only increase the anticipation for his upcoming Boyz Noize produced album.
