This solo drop from Big Boi, the ghetto-fied other half to Outkast’s André 3000, factors an inventive and joyous approach to the Dirty South sound. Filled with 80s synth funk, keyboards and talk boxes, Sir Lucious Left Foot… is truly something else. The Atlanta MC has taken the album to a whole new level, from the 1st single ‘Shutterbugg’, a club banger produced by Scott Storch, to old comrades Organized Noize contributing their verbal buzz to cheerleading chants, weird synth whistles, funk guitar, wobbling basslines and other strange stuff. Big Boi keeps a great balance of the soft as well as spits back and forth on the soulful ‘Be Still’ with Janelle Monae and the western soul of ‘The Train Pt 2: (Sir Lucious Left Foot Saves The Day)’. André 3000 also appears as producer on ‘You Ain’t No DJ’ with a crazy wine bottle-tapping sound throughout-something we can probably expect from the next Outkast album. Even with a long list of featured artists-as the standard MO with all rap albums-names like TI, Jamie Foxx, Janelle Monae and Gucci Mane aren’t able to shine as bright as Big Boi. This album may sound like the perfect @ss-shakin’, strip club soundtrack, but it’s also a definite contender for album of the year. Let’s see if André can top this.
