It was back in 2016 when JUICE first discovered Bayangan, the alter ego of neo-folk artist Fikri Fadzil. From his stripped-down recordings at the time, we knew this was a guy who had a story to tell, or rather, who knew how to tell a story.

“I’m brave enough and stupid enough to say things in public,” Fikri told us in an interview back then. Wearing his heart on his sleeve quickly earned the artist a loyal fanbase who were attracted to his raw sincerity.

We spoke to Fikri again in 2018, after the release of Bayangan’s debut album, Bersendirian Berhad, where he explored new grounds – with earthy sounds and cryptic lyricism, he touched on subject matters of living in contemporary urban Malaysia, and from personal relationship to societal issues.

Now, off the heels of last year’s Indonesian tour which culminated in an appearance at Joyland Festival, Bayangan, which has now evolved into a quintet with Fikri at the forefront, is releasing a new EP tomorrow (Friday, 24 May) and officiating the occasion with a live showcase at PJPAC.

Dari Pinggiran marks Bayangan’s latest release, an EP stemming from Fikri’s involvement in Sans Collective’s media art performance titled “Dari Pinggiran Vol:1” staged in 2022 at an abandoned school in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur.

Drawing inspiration from the derelict school which had also been partially turned into an immigrant village of migrant workers marred by its illegal status, the EP tells tales of existential limbo and is an introspection of Fikri’s experiences and observations there. The five-track EP is interwoven with ambient and field recordings from the production.

In addition to performing new songs, tomorrow’s gig will also feature a pre-launch listening session and a presentation lecture by Fikri, with visual and media installation by Sans Collective (who’s also behind the EP’s artwork), co-produced with Soundscape Records with the support of Five Arts Centre, and other partners.

The showcase will also feature two opening acts: free-jazz trio Upstart Incorporated (featuring ex-members of Think! Tadpole Think!) making a return after a 10-year hiatus, and experimental duo Francoe.
