Asher Roth

The nice people at Universal sent JUICE a package today. In it was albums from the following artists: Corbin “High School Musical” Bleau, Hoobastank, and Rascall Flatts. Jeez-Seuss! Now, I know Universal has good music. Eminem is about to drop. So I thought “wtf”. And then, after summoning up some zen, I thought “whatevah”. If I want good music, I’m just gonna have to find it myself. So I dug deep (well, not that deep) and would like to introduce to you … Asher Roth. Eminem sound-alike. About to drop album Asleep In The Bread Aisle end this month. On Universal. Oh the irony!

First time I heard ‘I Love College’ I thought it was Eminem. Same lazy nasal drawl. I dare you to close your eyes and tell me that you wouldn’t think the same. The guy even looks like some bizarro world alternate-reality Em, but preppy, like if Em was the bastard love child of sexy time between Andy Dick and Bill Gates.

Lyrically they are way diff of course. Asher is from Penn State (the state, not the prison system) middle class and college going, so Asher isn’t gonna rap about the 8th Mile, his nutso wife or having his house broken into by crack addicts … he’s gonna rap about cheap pizza and beer bongs. Doing it his way, aiit.

Anyway I reckon Asher Roth is gonna be hee-yoog! He was on the cover of XXL magazine’s annual Top 10 Freshmen: Hip-Hop’s Class ’09 issue and is the first white rapper to be featured on Drama and Cannon’s influential Gangsta Grillz series. Not bad for a guy who’s 1st album purchase was the Dave “so freaking comatose, you should just unplug my life support” Matthews Band.

More on Asher at his webbie, www.thedailykush.com. And hopefully more of him from Universal Malaysia. The album Asleep In The Bread Aisle drops end this month. Check the vid for ‘I Love College’ below.
