Armand Van Helden: New York: A Mix Odyssey Vol 2 (Southern Fried)
Putting together the best of hip house might seem like a daunting task to anyone other than the courageous remixer DJ Armand Van Helden. A hip houser himself, Van Helden’s scoops up hits from the mid-80s like a kid making a mixtape for his boombox. Tracks featured include a much younger and booty-licious Queen Latifah’s ‘Come Into My House’ and Fast Eddie’s ‘Acid Thunder’ in addition to Van Helden’s own songs. In an age of “artistic techno”, this album is a fun and entertaining relief. But then again, hip house was never meant to be taken seriously in the first place.
