Movement: Self-Titled
Text Khalid Azizuddin
PAIN & AGE
The distillation of stirring sensuality into the murky ether of post r’n’b is a trend that does not seem to have an end in sight. And here comes another outfit slinking in from the streets into the folds of the sheets, with their own sinister refinement of this most undulating of genres. Movement anchors down its atmospherics with post rock percussion and grinding, ragged bass throbs.
As is de rigueur, lead vocals are choir boy pretty but they are not as effortless and honey smooth as their peers. There is pain and age in the gasp and catch. It is the accommodation of the imperfect in the previously pristine/clinical template of post r’n’b that makes this EP such a compelling listen. The band does this nifty thing where the vocals slide in and out of focus.
It sounds tacky in theory but quite effective when the lyrics can be at times verging on the clunky and trite. With the effect, they sound like reverberations of one’s own thoughts on how they can be denied. The sound of the band at the moment is an interesting proposition, and with enough polish we wager it will be quite good.
