Street Fighters Duke It Out
It was like fight club all over again as almost 100 “street fighters” pitted their skills against each other at Cineleisure Mutiara Damansara earlier this month. Fortunately no blood was shed, and only a few egos were bruised as blows were traded via Sony Playstation console.
Organised by Outpost Events together with Sony Malaysia and RAM Entertainment, the Street Fighter IV tournament was held in conjunction with the release of the film version of popular video game Street Fighter, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li, which power kicked its way into cinemas nationwide on February 26.
Fans of the game, and of free gear, competed as their favourite characters for a 80GB PS3 worth over RM1599 and exclusive Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li movie merchandise. Tournament contestants were also treated to a special screening of Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li in Cathay Cineplex Damansara plus the opportunity to experience Street Fighter IV on the giant cinema screen.
Street Fighter IV (the game) brings the series back to its roots by taking the fighting moves and techniques of the original Street Fighter II, and infusing them with latest advancements in technology to enrich today’s video gaming experience. Gamers are spoilt for choice in this latest game instalment with a total complement of 19 characters to compete against.
After many challenging matches, the 2 finalists came down to training buddies Kenneth Aw and Mak Kien Leong, who chose classic Street Fighter characters Ryu and Ken respectively for their final match, with Aw eventually claiming the Tournament Championship. Non-competing visitors to the event area at the ground floor of Cineleisure also had the opportunity to try out Street Fighter IV on the Sony PS3â„¢.
The latest adaption from the famous series of fighting video games by Capcom, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (the movie) focuses on female fighter Chun-Li as she seeks justice after her father is murdered. Kristin Kreuk of Smallville TV series fame stars as Chun Li, also appearing are Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile), Chris Klein (American Pie), Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation), and er,  Taboo of the Black Eye Peas.
