Introducing: Julianna Barwick
According to Pitchfork (again), Louisiana-raised music maker/avant-garde wailer Julianna Barwick’s music is best described by producer and DJ Diplo as “Carebears making love”. A pretty spot-on description considering her sound delivers undecipherable lyrics, but with such emotional depth-sans the fur and rainbows.
Text Wayne Lee
Having pushed musical boundaries to good results from the indie fraternity, this Brooklyn-based sound artist uses a loop-station pedal, a dose of piano work and some touches of synths to produce a layered vocal sound that serves as tasty soul food to music junkies who love their abstract melodies. Her full-length album The Magic Place will be out at the end of this month on Asthmatic Kitty Records, and that is really good news.
