Big Day Out, Melbourne
Taking turns across 5 Aussie cities and Auckland and held in the searing hot seat of high summer in the southern hemisphere between January 21 and February 6, tickets for 2011 have already sold out in some cities. With an eclectic line up that takes in MIA, Bloody Beetroots, Lupe Fiasco, Ratatat, CSS, Andrew WK, Crystal Castles, LCD Soundsystem, Primal Scream, Plan B, Black Keys, Deftones, it’s little wonder.
The Big Chill, London
Already 15 years in the making, this annual festival of alternative, dance and chill-out music held in the grounds of Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire not far from London has retained its laid back dance music roots even as its size has multiplied. Mixing up live acts with DJs, among the artists it attracted in August this year were Massive Attack, Thom Yorke, MIA, Lily Allen and Tinie Tempah.
Fuji Fest, Tokyo
The mother of all Asian music fests Fuji Rock Festival’s 3 day music meltdown attracts over 100,000 party goers to Naeba Ski Resort. Held at the end of July across a sprawling 18 different areas, the amiable Japanese crowds make elbowing your way to the front of the stage areas for Them Crooked Vultutres, Muse, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, !!!, The XX seems too easy.
Parklife, Gold Coast
Dance music dominates at this Aussie festival fixture. Held in late September in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, and Melbourne and Brisbane, the one day event piles in beats, bass and acts like Brodinski, Busy P, Cut Copy, Dan Black, Darwin Deez, Groove Armada, Memory Tapes, Missy Elliott, Soulwax, The Dandy Warhols and Uffie, then tops it off with an official After Party aptly called After Life. We likey.
Culture One, Bangkok
Watch out Zoukout, you’ve got competition! The Thais know how to let loose and party and they demonstrate at Bangkok’s first ever dance music festival, Culture One. Held at the lakeside of Bitec Bangna every January, this year Svan Vath, Graham Gold, Horsemeat Disco, Chris Liebling and superclub Slinky kept clubbers on their feet well into the small ones.
Global Gathering, Seoul
Global Gathering may not be a Korean original import but the touring British superclub looks to be a festival mainstay for the capital city’s ardent clubbers. With Justice as its headliner this year and Fatboy Slim and Armin Van Buuren keeping the tempo, Seoul doesn’t just have soul, it’s got funk soul, brother.
