There’s a crazy list of creative heads heading our way this month for KL Design Week 2010 and we’re psyched about it! Here, we’d like to focus on Haroshi, who transforms used skateboards into art. This Japanese artist uses wooden mosaic, dots and pixels, and works them into different shapes and styles.

Haroshi has been a fan of skateboarding since he was a teenager and he knows the skateboard in its entirety from the shape to the wheels. He feels reluctant to throw away crashed skateboards, so he is compelled to pick them up to make art pieces. Haroshi has since launched a series of art pieces made using the interesting and unique layer patterns of old skateboard decks. He’s taking eco and recycled artwork to a new level.

Both skateboard and art piece are equally important in Haroshi’s life. In every art piece, he insets a metal portion to give it soul, just like how Japanese Buddha sculptor Unkei gave soul to the Buddha’s heart by setting a crystal ball called Shin-getsu-rin (new moon circle).
