Yeasayer: New Psych Rising
Many psychedelic music lovers already know the Brooklyn-based experimental band for their trippy, highly-visual live sets. However there’s a whole cluster of indie-mopping, electro-jiggling people out there that have yet to experience Yeasayer’s acid-drenched sun-soaked music. Band members Anand Wilder, Chris Keating and Ira Wolf Tuton describe their music as “Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel”. Translation: it’s mystical, complex and groovy. After making waves with their debut All Hours Cymbals, the band has recently followed up with Odd Blood. There might not be any ‘Sunrise’ – the band’s initial hit that was featured on an episode of Entourage – but Odd Blood‘s 1st single ‘Ambling Alp’ is as happy as it is weird and that makes for a hit with . We especially love the bouncy reggae-ish chorus and bassline that goes chirping over polyrhythmic drums.
Love ain’t free but Yeasayer’s ‘Ambling Alp’ (Secretly Canadian) is. Download the track at www.amblingalp.com. Zone out to their older stuff at www.myspace.com/yeasayer.
