I Was King: Royal Fuzz
Norwegian power pop indie band I Was A King has been garnering attention for a while now. Still, being called a “band to watch” by Stereogum and receiving equally-flattering praises from the snooty critics at Pitchfork is no reason to jump the gun. JUICE, however, will break it down for you. Imagine all the catchiest, sweetest melodies of the 60s going through a distortion pedal and twisted up in a strange Scandinavian pop way. ‘Norman Bleik’ is the 1st single taken from the band’s self-titled 2nd album which will be released early next year. Apart from the over-fuzzy guitars, the song is not only influenced by Teenage Fanclub but is actually a tribute to Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake – the punning misspelling of his name a reference to the Fanclub’s 1995 classic ‘Neil Jung’. And with an all-star lineup for their upcoming album including Sufjan Stevens, Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) and Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), you should prepare yourself with a quick dose of fuzziness.
