The JAECOO J5 EV is coming to Malaysia, and it understands the need of Malaysians who want more than just a way of getting from one place to another

You know the feeling: A particular kind of peace that comes from getting into your car after a long day, closing the door and sitting there for a minute before going anywhere.

The upcoming JAECOO J5 EV fits that exact vibe.

Currently open for bookings in Malaysia with an estimated price of RM125,000, the fully electric SUV follows a ‘Plug In, Tune Out’ concept, with features that cater to daily drives as well as whatever you’ve got planned once the laptop closes.

Here’s a look at its features:

1. There’s up to 402KM of WLTP range, so you have room for plans beyond the commute

The J5 EV packs a 58.9kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery with a claimed WLTP range of up to 402km. Its front-mounted electric motor produces 155 kW and 288Nm of torque.

When you need a top-up, 130kW DC fast charging can take the battery from 30% to 80% in around 28 minutes. It also supports 11kW AC charging, which is useful if plugging in at home is part of your routine.

In other words, the basics are covered before getting the fun stuff.

2. V2L and Camping Mode give you a good reason for going somewhere over the weekend

With 3.3kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, the J5 EV can use its battery to power compatible external appliances.

Camping Mode takes that idea further for weekends outdoors, giving you access to electricity even when the nearest socket isn’t exactly within walking distance.

Foodie road trip, a day hike, or a joy ride in the city — it doesn’t matter where you go, you’ll always have enough power to do your thing.

3. Your dog/cat/rabbit can get some consideration too, thanks to a dedicated Pet Mode

The J5 EV’s Pet Mode keeps the air-conditioning running even after you’ve locked the vehicle, while displaying a message to let passers-by know your pet is comfortable inside.

The cabin is pet-friendly too, with TÜV-certified leatherette upholstery that’s antibacterial and scratch-resistant. This is great for anyone whose animal baby has permanent passenger status, though proper restraints and supervision still apply.

4. The cabin has plenty to keep you comfortable, plus karaoke if you’re in the mood

The J5 EV comes with an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a portrait-oriented 13.2-inch 2K infotainment touchscreen, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You’ll also find ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 50W wireless charger and a large moonroof.

And yes, there’s in-car karaoke (honestly, so important), though the microphones are sold separately.

5. There’s also a 35-litre frunk for things that never seem to have a proper home

With no combustion engine sitting under the bonnet, the J5 EV uses some of that space for a 35-litre front trunk.

This is handy for charging equipment, gym gear or smaller items you’d rather not have bouncing around the spacious main boot with its 480 litres of space.

6. Level 2+ driver assistance can lend a hand when the drive stops being relaxing

The J5 EV comes with 19 Level 2+ ADAS, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, autonomous emergency braking, lane centring assist and blind spot monitoring with collision prevention.

There’s also a 540-degree camera, rear cross-traffic alert with auto braking and door-opening warning among its listed features.

You’ll still need to stay alert and in control, but a little assistance during peak-hour traffic or a particularly tight parking situation is rarely unwelcome.

When you put everything together, the J5 EV seems most interesting when you look beyond the usual EV numbers
