Malaysian folk hero Azmyl Yunor, one of the few still-active singer-songwriters to emerge from his generation, will launch the limited cassette reissue of his now-classic 2010 folk album Warga on Saturday, 20 June 2026 at Scream! Bloody! Bar! in The Zhongshan Building, Kuala Lumpur’s celebrated independent arts and cultural hub.
A Reunion of the KL Singer-Songwriter Generation
The launch show doubles as a reunion of sorts for the vibrant KL singer-songwriter movement that flourished in the 2000s.
Joining Azmyl on stage are Sharidir (better known as Sherry, one of the pioneering Central Market buskers of the ’80s and ’90s), Ariff Akhir (fellow troubadour, longtime collaborator, and co-producer/engineer of Warga and John Bangi Blues), and Tan Sei Hon, Azmyl’s compatriot in Troubadours and KL Sing Song, two key entities that helped bring the local singer-songwriter scene to the forefront of the city’s independent music culture.

An Album Shaped by a Changing Malaysia
Originally launched in May 2010 to a packed house at the legendary No Black Tie, Warga arrived at a pivotal moment in Malaysian history. Emerging in the aftermath of the 2008 General Election, the album captured the anxieties, hopes, contradictions, and everyday realities of a nation entering a decade of profound political and social change.
The original launch itself has since become part of local music lore, featuring a rare acoustic performance by Malaysian punk legends Carburetor Dung alongside the late folk icon Meor Yusof Aziddin, the soulful acoustic sounds of Slowjaxx, and the pastoral folk reflections of Farmhouse.
The Legacy of a Cover Image

Equally striking is Warga‘s now-iconic cover photograph, depicting daytime traffic outside Pudu Raya bus station.
In retrospect, the image proved almost prophetic. Just a year later, the same location became a focal point of the historic Bersih rally of 2011, an event that signalled a major shift in Malaysia’s political landscape and foreshadowed the turbulent transformations that would define the decade.
Limited Release, Future Plans
Only 80 copies of the cassette reissue will be produced. Priced at RM30 each, every cassette includes a Bandcamp download code and complimentary stickers.
Azmyl is also expected to announce a mini local tour in conjunction with the reissue.
