5 Cool DIYs You Can Try Instead Of Doomscrolling

We’ve all been there. You open TikTok for “five minutes”, blink once, and suddenly it’s two hours later and you’ve somehow learned the life story of a raccoon in Ohio.
If your screen time report is starting to look a little judgmental, here are five creative ways to keep your hands busy and your brain entertained without staring at a screen all day.

1. Give Your Earphones a Glow-Up
Your earphones or headphones don’t have to look fresh out of the box forever. Grab some paint, beads, rhinestones, stickers, charms, or even a crochet hook and turn them into something uniquely yours.
Bedazzle them until they’re impossible to lose. Crochet a tiny cover. Paint on doodles. Add charms that jingle every time you move.
Functional? Yes. Slightly unhinged? Also yes!

2. Make an Altoids Tin Wallet
The humble Altoids tin has been the DIY community’s secret weapon for years.
Clean one out and transform it into a mini wallet or storage box. Add stickers, mirrors, magazine cutouts, fabric, or paint. Then use it to store cash, cards, jewellery, earbuds, guitar picks, or whatever random treasures usually disappear into the void of your bag.
Bonus points if it looks like something you’d find in a cool vintage shop.

3. Customise a Lighter Case
Whether you’re using it for a lighter, lip balm, or just as a tiny art project, decorating a lighter case is surprisingly fun.
Cover it with fabric scraps, sculpt little designs from clay, paint it, glue on charms, or mix different materials together for a completely one-of-a-kind look. It’s small enough to finish in an afternoon but detailed enough to keep you occupied for hours.

4. Twist Aluminium Wire Into Jewellery
You don’t need fancy equipment to start making jewellery.
A roll of aluminium wire and a pair of pliers can go a long way. Twist, bend, loop, and experiment until you’ve created rings, bracelets, necklaces, or abstract wearable art.
The best part is that every piece comes out slightly different, so even your mistakes can end up looking intentional.

5. Bleach-Dye Your Old Clothes
That hoodie you’ve been wearing since forever? Give it a second life.
Instead of tossing old clothes aside, use bleach to create custom designs. A paintbrush gives you much more control than traditional tie-dye, allowing for everything from simple patterns to intricate artwork.
With a little patience, you can turn a plain black hoodie into something that looks straight out of an alternative fashion store.
Doomscrolling will still be there when you get back. Your ‘For You Page’ isn’t going anywhere.
Sometimes the best way to reset your brain is to make something with your hands, whether it’s a piece of jewellery, a customised accessory, or a gloriously over-decorated Altoids tin.
You might even end up with a new hobby instead of another hour lost to scrolling!
