INTERVIEW: The Baby Cosmos Discuss Their EP ‘The Human Condition’ & Upcoming Show

It’s hard to believe The Baby Cosmos only started in 2022. In just a couple of years, the KL-based trio has gone from standing in the crowd to owning the stage. All while juggling uni life, internships, and everything in between.

Made up of vocalist-guitarist Timothy George, lead guitarist Darrel Jacques, and bassist Joseph Khoo, the band has become a familiar name in the local indie circuit, known for their heartfelt lyrics, nostalgic sound, and the kind of energy that sticks with you long after the amps shut off.

The exciting news is that they’re gearing up for their biggest moment yet, which is the launch of their sophomore EP, The Human Condition, happening on 16 August at Live Fact.

With opening acts from local up-and-comers Dukes and The Fridays, the launch promises to be a celebration of everything The Baby Cosmos stands for. Community, vulnerability, and that raw, youthful energy that made us fall in love with indie rock in the first place.

We caught up with the boys ahead of their next big show to talk about how it all started, what it’s been like growing into the local scene, and how their band name has nothing to do with outer space.

Here’s a summary of our conversation:

What have you guys been up to recently in your personal life and as a band?

DARREL: The past few months have been quite packed with planning this concert. Everything from the organising to the making of the EP as well. But the free time in between all the work is spent with friends and family. Usually, even amongst the boys, we tend to see each other only for band related things.

Every now and then, we do catch up just as friends to chit-chat over some food and drinks; that’s what matters most at the end of the day.

You guys have been around since 2022. What’s it like being a newish band in the scene these days?

TIMOTHY: It’s funny but surreal at the same time. We used to go to indie shows and be the “young ones” there; this was when we were 18 or 19, and everyone would be telling us how young we were. But now we are the “older ones” at the indie shows.

I was at a show not too long ago, and I was talking to this guy about his band, and he told me he was 18. That made me feel really old, and it did leave me speechless for a brief second, I have to admit. But being a newish band in the scene now is pretty cool because people have actually heard of us, which is an insane fact to me.

Adding to that, people have come to our shows knowing the words to our songs, which really blew my mind. So, all in all, it’s a really cool feeling, and I am very grateful for it.

You have self-organised two shows which sold out. What was it like organising your own shows? Any tips on promoting gigs?

DARREL: The more you do it, the more stressful it becomes because you must learn from your previous mistakes. Always debrief after and reflect on what went right and what went wrong. While it can be difficult and time-consuming, it is also very rewarding to contribute to the community as well as grow as individuals.

JOSEPH: When we organised our first gig, it was a major learning experience for all of us. We were underprepared, and we did not really know what we were doing. However, we had help along the way, and together with extremely supportive friends and family, we were able to pull it off.

The second one had some mistakes as well, but it was an improvement from the first. Leading into our third gig, we have the experience and network to make this event an unforgettable one.

What can we expect from your upcoming show?

TIMOTHY: Well, we’ll definitely be playing the entirety of our new EP, The Human Condition, from front to back, and of course, we’ll be playing our other older songs that we love playing and that people love listening to as well. But we’re also aiming to bring a different stage presence to the performance, one our audience has never seen from us before.

JOSEPH: I think the thing people can expect is to walk away with post-concert depression. We have worked extremely hard, giving careful thought to everything, hoping to put on a banger of a show, from curating the setlist to the lighting and theatrics.

For those unfamiliar with your band, how do you describe your sound?

TIMOTHY: I’d say nostalgic. We’ve always been told that our music makes them feel a sense of nostalgia and freedom in a way. And I have to admit I do get what they’re getting at. With that being said, we’re also experimenting and looking to broaden our musical soundscape.

DARREL: We’ve always been classed as an indie rock band with a coming-of-age sound. With our new EP, that sound has come of age a little, and we’re exploring new waves of music, inspired by the artists we listen to daily, ranging from Kings of Leon to Inhaler to The Marias. It’s a bit rojak.

How did you come up with your band name?

TIMOTHY: It came from my sister, as funny as it may seem. I told her that we were booked to play our first gig, and she got excited and started thinking of names for the band. We told her we were thinking of having a flower-inspired name. She used one of those band name generators on the internet and ended up with “The Baby Cosmos”.

Yeah, that’s right, “Cosmos” in “The Baby Cosmos” refers to the Cosmos flower, not the universe. I don’t know why everyone thinks of the universe when they hear our name, but there you go.
