#PNipu Trends After Election Commission Says M’sians Aged 18 to 20 Are Not Allowed to Vote for GE15

According to TMR, Undi18 which allows Malaysians aged 18 to 20 to vote and new voters to be automatically registered, will only be implemented in September 2022. Hence, youths in the age group will not be eligible to vote in the next general election (GE15).

Despite several MPs agreeing that 18-year-olds can vote, the Election Commission (EC) cited last year’s Movement Control Order (MCO) as the reason for this delay.

Its chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the commission wants to be realistic and ensure the system is well-prepared before enforcing Undi18. He said the MCO, which came into force in March 2020, has halted EC’s planning for both agendas, which were scheduled to be implemented this July.

“The automatic voter registration and Undi 18 are expected to be implemented after 1 Sept 2022, after we re-evaluate various constraints and issues that affect the planning and initial preparations of the EC,” Abdul Ghani said in a statement yesterday (24 March).

Since the announcement, it has angered a lot of Malaysians especially the youth. NGO Undi18 and the political party MUDA even said that they were planning legal action against the government over the delay.

Many Malaysians felt betrayed as they felt that the explanation didn’t make sense given that they had over a year to plan and implement what was initially promised.

In fact, former Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq, called out Perikatan Nasional in a tweet for not keeping their promise.
