This Malaysian Company is Selling Wagyu Beef at RM29,999 for Hari Raya Korban
Hari Raya Aidiladha, also known as Hari Raya Korban, is a Muslim ritual of giving back to the community. For those celebrating and who are able to, it is encouraged to donate fresh meat produces, usually beef or lamb, to the poor.
One Malaysian produce company, Asia Harvest Agro is offering imported Wagyu beef packages for Hari Raya Korban at RM29,999 for 50kg that will be delivered straight to your home for you to donate to the poor.
According to its Facebook post, an average Wagyu cattle that weighs 800kg can produce up to 360kg and the actual market price for the A5 Wagyu beef could reach up to RM50,000 per 50kg.
The company states that the Wagyu beef is imported from Miyazaki, Japan and the korban ceremony will be handled by a slaughterhouse in Japan that has been approved by the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM).
Many netizens jumped to comment about the price saying that it strays from the purpose of the ritual, but Asia Harvest Agro managing director, Najib Jalil said they launched the package after consulting with various parties including religious affairs officials.
“The first criticism received was when they questioned the purpose of charity, and why not do regular slaughters that could have more cows for the korban,” he said.
“However, there are dignitaries and organisations who wish to join the korban,” Najib told Awani.
This isn’t the first time that they’re offering Wagyu beef. Najib who has been supplying Wagyu beef imported from Australia and Japan said the company also offers regular beef packages. He said the purpose of the package is to cater to those who can afford to do korban with the best bulls in the world.
According to Najib, the slaughtering of an 800kg Wagyu cattle will take place on the first until the third day of Hari Raya Aidiladha and there are procedures for storing the meat. However, it will arrive in Malaysia within 10 to 15 days in the month of Zulhijjah.
He also said they prefer to use aircraft to transport because they are afraid it would affect the quality of the meat and they are targeting to sacrifice about five Wagyu cattle this year.
The Wagyu beef korban package aroused outrage among netizens due to its high price point. The average price of a share of korban beef usually starts at around RM290 and ranges up to RM2,000 depending on the quality and breed.
After netizens filled up the comment section of the Facebook post regarding the pricey Wagyu beef, the company has now announced that they are now offering a Wagyu beef korban package at RM799 per part. Anyone interested to purchase the package can order it by filling out a form at one of the 55 AEON outlets nationwide.
