Win USD20,000 By Making a Short Film with Your Smartphone
It’s common knowledge that even the most modest of Hollywood movies these days are made with budgets that exceed the average Malaysian’s annual income. Having a big budget for production, however, does not guarantee a memorable cinematic experience. As any indie filmmaker would note, creativity trumps all at the end of the day.
Recognising the DIY-spirit of visual storytelling, HUAWEI Malaysia recently launched their inaugural HUAWEI Film Awards–an Asia Pacific festival and competition seeking to usher in a new wave of filmmakers and content creators, opened to all from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
The awards was launched with a screening of short films directed by five established local filmmakers and creators–Kroll Azry, Gavin Yap, Jess Teong, Tuan Faisal and Nik Amir–with the theme ‘Empowering Your Possibilities’, all done with the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro. Checkout Gavin Yap’s short Chasing Santosham below:
The winner of the APAC Best Film Awards will receive a grand prize of USD20,000, while the winner of the Country Level Best Film in Malaysia will snag a new HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro.
As if the cool USD20k at stake isn’t enough to get us excited, the lenient criteria for entering the competition makes it easy for all to participate. All you need to do is to film entirely on a HUAWEI smartphone with a running time within 5-10 minutes. You can also record any theme of storytelling (instead of sticking to Huawei’s theme), but by doing so, your short film will be limited to less than 5 minutes.
With a panel of judges that consist of creative veterans such as Adele Lim (who co-wrote smash hit Crazy Rich Asians), we’re sure the finalists will be picked based on their ingenuity and we look forward to watching their shorts.
The HUAWEI Film Awards is now open for entries and you have until 25th February 2020 at 11.59pm to submit your short film. Click here for more details.
