Yuna
When we first heard Yuna’s alluring voice, who would’ve thought it belonged to a Malaysian young lady? Timid looking, tudung-clad Yuna was soft spoken and feminine, but when she sang, we melted. This young female acoustic/ folk singer-songwriter based in KL started penetrating the local indie scene in 2007.
Only 22 years old, Yunalis or Yuna for short, has made many media appearances and performed at a good number of gigs all over the country. Her sweet demeanor during performances invokes sounds and images of Corinne Bailey Rae. Unsurprisingly, her EP was sold out almost immediately after it was released – already 2 batches have been printed. Yuna digs Coldplay, Garbage, Alanis Morissette, Bjork, The Cardigans and admits to inciting influence from their work when writing or recording any of her own singles. A few of her self-penned songs ‘Deeper Conversation’,’ After Midnight’, and her only Malay track ‘Dan Sebenarnya’ has truly proven that this songbird is not only gifted with a voice of an angel, but is also a talented songwriter. “Lately, everything has been smooth sailing for me,” the aspiring young artist tells JUICE, as her song ‘Dan Sebenarnya’ shot up to # 1 on Hot FM. Despite her growing recognition, law student Yuna remains modest. She has her own band consisting of a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer backing her up.
