Instead of Normal Engagement Rings, Couples are Now Piercing Diamonds Into their Fingers
Who would’ve thought that engagement rings would have their own trend? Instead of opting for a typical diamond ring that you can get at Habib Jewel or Poh Kong, some young people who are about to get hitched are going for a diamond that is embedded INTO to their fingers. Talk about commitment.
In a report by CBS New York, many millennials are leaning towards this trend as they are more familiar with piercing studios than jewellery shops. Sam Abbas, owner of NYC Ink Studio told CBS that, “We notice lately a lot of people coming looking for that”.
Abbas continued by stating that there could be problems if the person doesn’t take care of the piercing, which requires cleaning two to three times a day. They also have to make sure the piercing artist has experience as it’s not a common area to pierce.
“You’re dealing with the blood, so you got to be very, very safe,” he said before adding, “we sterilise everything.”
The procedure involves the artist marking the spot with a pen, cleaning the area with alcohol and iodine, using a tool to remove a small patch of skin, and inserting an anchor made of titanium or gold which holds the gem together. The whole process takes about 10 minutes and costs around USD$100 for the piercing. The diamond you choose is a separate cost.
Even though it does look nice to an extent, the piercing could leave a scar and can cause many complications. As for the pain?
“You’re going to feel it. You’re getting pierced. It is a little bit painful. But people did it, and I have a lot of people who say, ‘Oh nice, it’s nothing, I expect more’,” said Abbas.
So yeah, it’s normal for young people to create new trends but not everyone is cool with this one in particular. A dermatologist, Dr. Monica Halem, told CBS that she has some concerns.
“First of all, these procedures are not being done by a doctor, and it is a surgical procedure,” she said. “There are a lot of important structures that sit right under the skin there that can easily be damaged, like tendons.”
There’s also the danger of the diamond snagging. “That’s [a piercing] sitting right above the skin, that’s easily caught on something and can do a lot of damage,” said Halem.
She said you should think carefully before going for the new trend. Healing from this kind of piercing can take up to 20 weeks. And if you want the diamond-piercing removed, that’s possible but more painful than the initial piercing.
