Bad news for cola lovers out there. It’s not only bad because of its sugar content that might cause diabetes and tooth decay, the health issues go way further than that causing weak bones and even paralysis! The large content of fructose, glucose and caffeine also causes the ‘softening of the bones’ and patients have been seen suffering from hypokalaemia – where potassium levels in the blood drop too low. This can increase the risk of muscle problems and heart rhythm abnormalities which could prove fatal in some cases. Yikes!

Dr. Moses Elisa, from the University of Ioanina in Greece published his story in the International Journal of Clinical Practice and highlighted cases where patients drank 2 or more litres of cola a day. In one case, a 21-year-old pregnant woman who consumed more than 3 litres of cola per day for the last 6 years was admitted to the hospital suffering from tiredness, loss of appetite and repeated vomitting. Once she stopped taking cola and was given potassium replacement substances only did she make full recovery.

Dr. Clifford Packer from the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Centre in Ohio said that the consumption of soft drinks reached 552 billion litres or 82.5 litres per person in 2007. This number is predicted to increase to 95 litres per person in 2012. Holy cow.

He also said that apart from causing obesity, Type 2 diabetes, dental decay and metabolic syndrome, the drink also appeared to increase the risk of osteoporosis, gout, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and chronic kidney disease. That doesn’t sound anywhere near pleasant at all.

Do you want to be healthy? Drinking soda is bad for your health in so many ways, science can’t even state all the consequences. Here’s what happens in your body when you assault it with cola:

– Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don’t vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavour.
– Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.
– Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.
– Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain – a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.
– After 60 minutes, you’ll start to have a sugar crash.

Is that enough reason to make you want to stop drinking soft drinks?
