VIDEO: Chris Martin of Coldplay Paid Tribute to Chester Bennington With a Cover of ‘Crawling’
The death of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington was a sudden and emotional event for fans all over the world. The singer, famously described as the voice of a generation, particularly in the early to mid ‘00s, was quoted to be “an enthusiastic, playful father, an honest, and passionate musician, and a loyal friend” by the band’s bassist Dave ‘Phoenix’ Farrell. Linkin Park also brought upon a new type of synth-pop and hip hop mixture at the time, with MC Mike Shinoda’s rap blending into Chester’s screaming vocals. After years of tremendous success with the band, Chester lost to his demons on 20 July and died from suicide, he was only 41 years old.
To pay tribute to the late frontman, Chris Martin of Coldplay opened his New Jersey tour at the MetLife Stadium with a solo piano rendition of ‘Crawling’ from Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory – the album that earned its place in the hearts of many through its honest portrayal of pain and angst. Dedicated to “anyone who’s missing someone,” Chris restarted the song with an attempt to perfect his cover since it will most likely end up on YouTube.
