German DJ-producer CEE has been active in our local scene for some years now – from his early Monsoon days to his Bass Sekolah project with electropop doyen Darren Ashley – but even prior to that, he was more prominently known for being a member of AL-HACA Soundsystem back in Germany. A name even a seemingly random record store in Japan would recognise – we can attest to this having been to one of them. With a hefty oeuvre of releases prior to moving to Malaysia (and after, even), the vet is finally prepping for the imminent release of solo EP diversions 01 (out Thursday 18 August, 264 Records) – a four-tracker featuring Detour compatriot reesh9000, tradition-honouring soulstress Najwa Mahiaddin, Syndicate’s vocal powerhouse Vandetta, Bassment Syndicate’s bass-wunderkind Fook, Poland’s gallivanting DJ Mike Polarny, and José James’s bassist Solomon Dorsey. Just last week, we got a taste of first single ‘Night Falls (feat. Mike Polarny)’ via The Fader, now, premiering on KALTBLUT Magazine just yesterday, CEE shares second single ‘Pilunja’ – his collaborative effort with Najwa and reesh9000 – in video form. Shot DIY style, the psychedelic visuals were achieved through having his iPhone hooked to the car as he drove down from jungle resort The Dusun to the nearby village, with iOS app HYPERSPEKTIV aiding the visual distortions. Fitting effect considering the hypnotic power of Najwa’s lagu asli-style vocal work on the track, which complements the footwork-inspired production better than you’d think.
