Places to Go on the Weekend of 1 — 3 April ’16
The start of this weekend begins with a celebration for fun-loving fools — spend it with The Bat Cave and Home Court at League of Captain’s fifth edition of its Prime Fridays event series or celebrate Future Sound Asia’s fifteenth anniversary with Hardwell at KL Live. The rest of the weekend sees markets for handmade goods as well as one that celebrates democracy and freedom (Art For Grabs: Have A Balloon). End the weekend by attempting to watch a screening of Yasmin Ahmad’s Muallaf — we say attempt because it’s on a first come first serve basis, and lots of people are planning to go too.
LoC Prime Fridays #5 feat. The Bat Cave and Home Court
Previously, LoC Prime Fridays shows have tended towards bass music, this coming Friday’s edition however, will be a night of hip hop. Hosted by Jin Hackman, the night will see performances by Zet Legacy and K-Main, representing The Bat Cave collective, as well as Home Court, the new duo comprising of ambient producer Dae Kim and rapper Yang Ariff. Also, here’s a bit of a pro-tip; you don’t need to drop by your favourite neighbourhood liquor shop for pre-drinks in fear of expensive alcohol — five bottles of Heineken will be priced at just RM32.50 on this night.

Future Sound Asia Pres. Go Hardwell Or Go Home
If you haven’t already gotten tickets to see Hardwell tonight, we’d advise you not to read beyond this sentence as all of its general tickets have sold out. But all hope isn’t completely lost, Future Sound Asia (FSA) has a few of its last minute fans’ backs as a limited number of VIP tickets will be sold at the door, however, the price tag is a little heavy. We’re talking RM230 kind of heavy. Is it worth it? Of course. On the artiste roster tonight are Hypeembeats (scheduled to open the event at 8pm) and BATE (slated to be on at 9.30pm), followed by Goldfish + Blink (10.30pm), Kill The Buzz (11.30pm), and lastly, Hardwell, who’s expected to be on at half past midnight. Besides getting hype over seeing Hardwell, the agenda for tonight is to celebrate FSA’s 15th anniversary! Wish the guys a happy anniversary and don’t do anything that’ll get the company in trouble with authorities — for the love of live shows, do away with the drugs from the event area and keep the vape devices at home. No, seriously, vape machines aren’t allowed in the premise. Thank lord.

Art For Grabs: Have A Balloon
Malaysia is infamous for various reasons — traffic jams, hiring witch doctors to solve problems, but mostly for the damnedest things our ministers would say. It’s important to be able to laugh at these situations or else you’d go mad, which is something you’d be able to do at this event. Art For Grabs’ Have A Balloon is an event that celebrates democracy and freedom while embracing the circus that our country is shaping into.
Over 80 booths, causes, and such – not mentioning 11 events happening within its two-day period! – will be set up during that weekend, plus a heap of brain picking activities for everyone to enjoy. Among the few planned are Klash of The Titans, it’s a Politiko tournament with actual political figures such as Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, Serdang MP Ong Kiang Ming, Political Scientist Wong Ching Huat, and Human Rights lawyer Edmund Bon Tai Soon. An interesting lineup, no doubt. There’s also a poetry performance by the guys who host If Walls Could Talk — cheekily titled Poetically Correct — which will see nine poets describing what it takes to be free in a country that doesn’t fully practise democracy. There are also multiple forum discussions regarding sedition, feminism, and Big Brother governing.
Those are only a few of what will go down on the Have a Balloon weekend, check out the itinerary in its entirety here.

Muallaf Screening
Muallaf is a story of three individuals who find solace in religion. It was directed by our country’s beloved creative figure, Yasmin Ahmad. However, if you hadn’t seen it almost a decade ago when it was released, we don’t blame you seeing as the main theme based around the movie revolved around religion, so naturally Muallaf was never shown in Malaysia during the auteur’s lifetime – it will be this Sunday. Head over to The Bee to watch the film that made our censorship board uncomfortable and if you have any questions regarding the movie after, a few of its cast members may be present to answer them. This screening is free for everyone’s viewing pleasure, but it’s on a first come first serve basis, so get there early. Camp out if you must. Do what it takes! Also, 20% of sales made from food and drink orders will be donated to the Yasmin Ahmads museum’s maintenance fund.
