VIDEO: The Shoes’ ‘Submarine (Feat. Blaine Harrison)’

We became familiar with French duo The Shoes through their video ‘Time to Dance‘ featuring a murderous Jake Gyllenhaal — it was a great video. The Shoes’ dance pop can move from benign indie to pummeling techno, but for their single titled ‘Submarine’ that features Mystery Jets‘ Blaine Harrison, it is a beautiful piece of composition. The downtempo and breathing space within the song really gives way for the vocals to shine until the climax where the drums kick in for a full effect. The music video directed by Karim Huu Do showcases “a hellish relationship breakdown into a disturbing slice of cinema.” Aside from the faceless people, the girl seems to be possessed by an alien or perhaps a demonic being as her blithe laugh slowly turns into a chilling shrill. There’s also a scene reminiscent of The Day The Earth Stood Still where the man touches a pink ominous entity. ‘Submarine’ has the definite atmospheric mood to score such a well-made video.
