LISTEN: Smany’s ‘Music (Adam Kasturi Remix)’
Bunkai-Kei is possibly the most buzzed about netlabels in Japan (amongst the genre-savvy, at least), and Smany is their brightest internet star thus far. Combining potent acoustic vocal work with minimal electronica, her tracks find resonance in her glacially soft and dejected vocals, the cathartic slow ambient production, and its musique concrète-style sample work, all suggesting some sort of Zen-like emotionality in her music. With the vocal track from ‘Music’ — a highlight off new album Polyphenic — available for download through SoundCloud, local electronic outlier Adam Kasturi took the opportunity to remix it into something quite different from Smany’s original arrangement. Removing the dance-y side of the song, Adam instead creates a track that’s even lower tempo than Smany at her dreamiest — the result is startlingly ominous, like an end-of-the-world dirge.
