VIDEO: Jin Hackman’s ‘Banana’

Jin Hackman recently debuted the music video for his latest single ‘Banana’ (yes, it’s not yet another year-end ‘rap-up’), which chronicles the headaches he’s endured for not being able to speak his mother tongue since he was young. There are lots of cameos by a number of Banana Malaysian artistes, and while everyone is in character, the expression of disbelief when someone realises a Chinese is unable to speak Mandarin, Cantonese, or Hokkien is all too familiar. Except when it comes to ordering food. We’re sure there’s a banana army forming somewhere since its release. While the struggles of Bananas everywhere are the main contention of and the butt of the joke in this video, there’s an amount of absurdist — bordering on Dada — humour to be gleaned (or not) from the MV. In fact, Raising the Bar resident DJ Dae Kim’s whole arc sees Jin Hackman and him going full Eric Andre and Hannibal Buress — maybe a bit of Tim & Eric thrown in there too for good measure.
