Despite the success of modern, beat-oriented r’n’b around these parts (Cashmere Cat’s remix of Miguel’s ‘Do You…’ can really get the local crowd rowdy), we still haven’t seen a lot of local and regional talents who fit the same bill. Bandung’s Ayub Jonn might just change that with ‘Abadi’. Produced to finger-snapping flawlessness by Twiezzy, the summery r’n’b joint travels gossamer light and the words are appropriately saccharine. Ayub’s falsetto hits the right notes, exuding a Miguel-esque ability to complement a beat without sounding like a separate layer to an original instrumental. The music video sees Ayub crooning in Bandung’s rainforest – thankfully the actual song elevates the material.
