LISTEN: Orang Malaya’s ‘King of the Youth’

With liberal use of the N-word and gunshot adlibs that wouldn’t be out of place on a Chief Keef track (“Pow, pow!” “Bang, bang!”), you’d be forgiven for thinking ‘King of the Youth’ is a track by the next trending young’un rapper from the Chicago scene (or an NY type à la A$AP Mob at least). Alas, that uncomfortable feeling creeping into your subconscious once you realise it’s sung by Orang Malaya — a local act from the HOAX collective — is expected, and just as forgivable. Fret not though, HOAX head honcho Naufal Anwa assures us that Orang Malaya had spent four years in Queens, New York and another five in Pasadena, California — qualifiers for the N-pass, obviously. But drollness aside, the initial shock of it all shouldn’t detract from how much of a banger ‘King of the Youth’ really is. It helps that JGFZBTS drummer Omar Aiman is surprisingly adept on the drum machine as a beatmaker — giving an 808 trigger-finger skittishness to the languid beat for Orang Malaya to wax his inner G on (“Just wait till I pull the trigger”).

‘King of the Youth’ is the first single off the sequel to HOAX Loves UHOAX Hates U. Watch the video below:
