Nato straps (aka nylon straps) emerged as one of the most surprising trends as of late and have been welcomed with mix reviews.
Some people can’t stand the sight of them while others find Nato straps the perfect balance between casual and preppy. This JUICE writer on the other hand never though much of them until she was introduced to Victorinox Swiss Army’s new redesign of The Original late last year. Needless to say, that was when she fell in love.
If you didn’t already know, Victorinox Swiss Army doesn’t just sell Swiss army knives, the empire extends to timepieces, travel gear, cutlery, apparel and even fragrances. Their timepieces were inspired by the product Victorinox Swiss Army is most famous for – the iconic multi-purpose Original Swiss Army Knife, created by Karl Elsener all the way back in 1884.
The very first Victorinox Swiss Army Original timepiece (pictured left) on the other hand was launched in 1989 and has since, over the course of 20 years have proved to become one of the company’s best selling timepieces, thanks to its appeal to us younger folks. In that span of time it has become an icon in itself. As classic as the Victorinox Swiss Army Original was the company decided it was time to give this bestseller a facelift.
See, the problem with a lot of watches available right now in the market is that they’ve either got all the bells and whistles you don’t really need or are too colourful, too shiny, tacky, have too much bling or even worse – all of the above. So when the revamped Original was released late last year, it felt like a match made in heaven thanks to the watch’s simplicity and its neutral colours. On top of that, the new Original featured the ever so au courant Nato straps.
Even with its major redesign, it still retains the original’s features, heritage and its classic values of Swiss watchmaking and is still instantly recognizable as the authentic descendent of the line. The nylon fiber middle round case, 3 hands and date window follows the original design while the dial and the numerals have been completely reworked and subtly redesigned.
And why the sudden interest in watches, you wonder? Watches have always been an area of interest to me. Call me a closet watch fan, I even went for a watch Masterclass a few years ago to learn how to assemble and dismantle a watch. I may never become a watchmaker but at least I tried!
Sadly, I will never be able to be a watchmaker. I guess all I can do is be a watch collector, and The Original is the best watch to start a collection because of its reasonable price. The Original is available in navy green, commando black, desert beige or khaki green. It’s so nice, you’ll have trouble deciding which colour you want to purchase… but why decide when you can win a whole set of Victorinox Swiss Army The Original?
