Extreme sports enthusiasts huddle up and toss your various sports gear up in the air with reckless abandonment, for come 6 December at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall (Orange Entrance) sees Vans hosting the very first Vans skateboarding competition in Malaysia.
Set to be the largest skate event of the year in Malaysia, skaters are waiting with bated breath. The skate lifestyle brand sets the bar with a unique custom designed ramp to be built in a shopping mall where competing skateboarders can show off their tricks in the comfort of air-conditioning. The ramp, specially designed by local two-time gold medalist at the 2000 and 2004 Asian X-Games Pa’din Musa, will be the competing ground for at least 100 local and international skaters competing for the title of Vans King of the Gap. What’s with the name? Well skaters are expected to perform their tricks on the double set stair best known as “the gap”. There you go. Skaters will be judged by technical difficulty, landing, creativity and originality of tricks. With two categories in the competition: Open and Junior Category, skaters can compete on the gap or, if under the age of 16, compete in the Ollie Contest.
With a minimal participation fee of RM5, each skater will take home an exclusive goodie bag housing a Vans tee worth RM79.90, Vans shopping vouchers and gifts from the various sponsors of the event. The champion will bring home a cash prize of RM2500, the first runner-up will receive RM1000, and the second runner-up in the Open category will bag RM800. Winners also stand a chance to bring back Vans gift vouchers, Oakley products and et cetera.
Besides the adrenaline-pumping competition, there will be loads of exciting activities lined up as well, like skate decks displays, a skateboard balancing challenge, and a BMX Flatland Demo. Local bands Seven Collar T-Shirt and Army of Three are also slated to play, revving up the event with their energetic performances.
