If it weren’t for the Van Doren brothers, Paul and James, and their perseverance at the initial stages of the startup shoe company, Vans would not have gained the popularity it did today, and a lot of skateboarders, BMX riders, surfers, and common people like us would probably still be stuck as Neanderthals, roaming about the streets shoeless… Okay, we might be exaggerating here, but you get the point.
Lest the world forgets the humble and striving beginnings of Vans, the seventh installment of the Van Doren collection this season channels the spirit of the ’80s, a time when Vans started branching out to different categories of extreme sports — skateboarding, wakeboarding, motocross and surfing, and even garnered a Hollywood status when Sean Penn wore the classic Slip-Ons in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
The latest Van Doren collection features vintage prints, such as the Palm Leaf, Camo, Check, and Animal prints, mixing and matching with one another for a six-piece series. The Palm Leaf motifs are featured on the port royal Sk8-Hi Reissue, black Classic Slip-On, and navy Era. The Era model is further evolved with a vibrant colour-up that clashes orange Palm Leaf and Camo prints with Checker prints. For the Authentic model, it features retro Animal print uppers that’s a blend of the tiger’s stripes and the leopard’s spots.
The Vans Classics x Van Doren Fall ’14 colleciton retails from RM199, and is available at all Vans boutiques and selected dealers nationwide.
