Topshop AW09: Marianne

To a lot of people, her name might not ring a bell but you will definitely recognize her 60s mod girl fringe and long hair. Back when The Rolling Stones was at their peak, Marianne Faithfull was known as Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, and alongside Anita Pallenberg they were fashion icons of the 60s. She epitomized the swinging 60s style with flirty babydoll dresses, knee socks and big, dark eyes. Topshop takes a page from her fashion book and crafts a new collection inspired by Marianne for their AW09 line. See it after the jump.

Inspired by Marianne and her signature feather boas, large hats, and oversized sunnies, this retro-esque collection is fused with grunge, luxurious fabrics are given an antique finish, sequins are tarnished, faux furs appear matted and chunky knits are ragged and distressed.

Pieces in the Marianne collection include heavily sequinned dresses, harem trousers, faux mink jackets and marabou boleros add opulence to high waisted denim flares and love-worn leather hotpants. Pile on the accesories with suede scarves, velvet belts and platform shoes made from panels of foil and mock snakeskin finish off the mixture of textures which is key to this trend. The colour palette of dark metallics is interspersed with occasional splashes of bright turquoise, raspberry and yellow.
