Sanuk: Creating Happiness With Every Step

First things first, let’s clear up some confusion (if there is any). Although the word sanuk is the definition of all things fun and happy in Thai, the company it was named after was created by sun loving Jeff Kelley all the way from South Cali. And if you thought a pair of ‘Sidewalk Surfers’ (see above) are shoes, they are in fact, sandals. Yup, it’s hard to get your head around the facts, but don’t worry we’ve got it all right here!

Created in 97′, it all started when Jeff Kelley started making funky yet functional footwear out of real carpets and inner tubes. His spirit of innovation has gone on to create a proper footwear company that’s loved by millions just by making its name Sanuk a company mantra. Even their tagline “smile… pass it on” feels like a bucket of sunshine.

Two main designs that have made Sanuk popular among surfers, climbers and lovers of the great outdoors are Sanuk’s “Not A Shoe” Sandals, also known as the Sidewalk Surfers. Designed to combine the uppers of a shoe to the sole of sandal bottom, this patented design gives you the protection of a shoe combined with the flexibility and comfort of a sandal. Genius!

The other popular Sanuk product is the “Superfunktional” Yoga Mat Collection! If it’s comfort you’re looking for then look no further. The foot bed of these slippers are made out of actual yoga mats so every step you take in these babies give you that soft, cushion-y feeling that you can only get when you step on a yoga mat. It’s heaven, this one! Sanuk also doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket, with a price range from RM45 to RM169!

Because the people behind Sanuk come from various backgrounds of the global outdoor community, Sanuk’s products are inspired by them, for them. Sanuk also sponsors professional athletes around the world from surfers like Donovan Frankreiter to rock climber Chris Sharma.
