Passionate sneakerheads are probably well acquainted with the name Ronnie Fieg but for those who aren’t aware, Ronnie Fieg is a New York-based designer who has collaborated with brands such as ASICS, Converse, and Sebago. He’s also the brain behind the ever-growing sneaker emporium KITH. His opinion regarding a sneaker’s aesthetics or brand’s vibe when he’s on-board any collaboration is equally — if not more — important as Yeezus’ to adidas, a brand he’s worked with as well. Fieg continuously tackles establishing a balance between price and customer’s satisfaction. Although it’s still a work in progress, it’s safe to say it’s working out swimmingly for him.

His recent project with American footwear brand New Balance sees Fieg reworking its ‘Made In USA 998’ silhouette. The theme given for this project links back to the designer’s upbringing in the concrete jungle, specifically New York City. He utilises his signature tri-blocking around the forefoot, saddle, and rear areas; each bears different tones and materials but cohesive nonetheless. The idea behind the blue gradient was to reflect the brightness of the city even during the middle of the night; from blue nubuck to midnight navy to solid black. New Balance’s logo is reflective, relating to New York’s bright lighting. The emphasis of this pair being designed after the the city that never sleeps — exactly what this project is called — is brighter than its muse, no doubt. Lastly, this shoe is made with pigskin material — so, sorry halal friends, maybe next time.
