Puma City: Il Mostro
Puma is all about competition. The Puma Ocean Racing team, representing no less than six countries, is taking part in its 22nd Volvo Ocean Race. The strenuous race spans 9 months; covers 37, 000 nautical miles, 5 continents and 4 oceans; involces 10 legs; makes 11 visits to ports; and involves 7 in-port races and 7 pro-am races. Phew what a mouthful. In short, it’s tough.
For the race, Puma has a specially-built racing boat , the Il Mostro, built to resemble a giant floating sneaker. Its design is based on Puma’s classic ‘Mostro’ shoe released back in 1999, modeled after rock climbing shoes with a spiked outsole and crisscrossing Velcro straps. Look closer at the sails and you’ll discover the names of monsters on them. Menacing. The Il Mostro was completed only this April and was christened by Salma Hayek in Boston.
