Aina Abdul – or more fondly known as Aina Mentor – is a recognisable voice in the industry as of late. She offered her vocals for the epic soundtrack ‘Ribut Hati’ off Tombiruo: Penunggu Rimba, and proved to be a stellar performer via her live performance of the song at the recent Filem Festival Malaysia. For someone who is still in the midst of pursuing musical knowledge at UCSI, Abdul sounds like she’s been a professional for a long time. With amazing vocal control and runs that could kill, she’s released her debut English single titled ‘Reminiscing’ – an anticipated release from the up-and-coming bilingual singer-songwriter.
The r’n’b track is a straightforward expression of bittersweet nostalgia, produced alongside hitmaker Kuizz, and has recently penetrated the iTunes Top 200 Tracks Malaysia All Genre Chart upon its release. It was later on picked by Spotify to be put into the New Music Friday Malaysia playlist, putting Abdul on the same list as artistes like Sam Smith, Kygo, and DJ Snake. Inspired by singers like Yuna and Jhene Aiko, Abdul softens her belts for something more subdued in ‘Reminiscing’, yet her vocal dynamics remain, as she springs back with force towards the second half of the song.
“Reminiscing was originally written as an assignment for one of my classes and inspired by personal experiences,” says Abdul.
