Charcoals

The exuberance of youth is a wonderful thing where talent and common ideas can come together to create something exciting. And it’s with local creative Raja Susrina Khalid and Thai designer Fore where a fusion of ideas were birthed into a cutting edge fashion label.
Inspired by her teenage years as a punk and her fixation with the 90s, Charcoals was created last year when Raja quit her job as a Montessori school teacher, with the label finally going official in 2010. Raja had always held a fascination for dark, edgy clothing and accessories, which the Malaysian market had lacked, so she decided to start Charcoals by designing edgy and fashion forward collections that carry a punk aesthetic and a dash of glamour.
One look at Charcoals and you can see influences from the 80s, traces of inspiration from NY and Raja’s current obsession of draping, loose tops, sequins and leather. “[The collection] was shot at an abandoned penthouse near where I live,” says Raja of the fashion spread. “It was trashed with a really nice view of KL, and the surroundings go well with the whole concept of my current collection.” You can visit the Charcoals private boutique (by appointment only) or view and purchase the collections online at the Charcoals Shop on Facebook.
