Cashing in on the vast world of spandex-clad superheroes, Netflix have joined the comic book game. The streaming giant is going beyond the TV screen, to the original source with its first physical comic book release, The Magic Order, written by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Civil War) and illustrated by Olivier Coipel (House of M, Thor, Legion of Super-Heroes). The series will be published by Image Comics.

The Magic Order is a story about five families of magicians who secretly protect the world from evil forces. According to Millar, the book is “for the kids who enjoyed something like Harry Potter or that kind of genre growing up now having something that appeals to their adult sensibilities”. In the same interview with Comic Book Resources, Millar said, “Tonally, it’s much closer to The Sopranos in that it’s about a patriarch in an underworld family and his concerns about his children. King Lear is the basic structure, if that doesn’t sound too pompous, but with magic wands. And it’s dirty. It opens with a shagging scene, so you immediately know this isn’t Hogwarts.”

He sold us at shagging.  Check out the trailer below:

Netflix acquired Mark Millar’s comic book company, Millarworld last August in an effort to expand its development and original properties. Dare we say there might be a Kick-Ass series soon? We hope so and please bring back Nic Cage!

The Magic Order hits shelves June 13 but for us Malaysians, we might have to wait a little. For more pop culture, keep it here at JUICE.
