Ashes Boutique

by Miranda Yeoh on Wednesday, 3rd February 2010

Ashes Boutique
1st Floor 22A Jalan Telawi,
Bangsar Baru, KL.
Tel: 03 2287 7911

What’s in a name?
Young, budding female entrepreneurs make Telawi street what it is today - an area full of boutiques to dry anyone’s bank account and while we come by the truckloads with cash and plastic ready in hand (and sensible shoes to combat those stairs) it seems that with more boutiques comes competition. As a result the Telawi market becomes over-saturated with boutiques selling the same ol’ products as every other boutique on the street. So how does that make newcomer Ashes boutique any different?

Saturday 20 June 2009 went down as one crazy day. In the run up to the Juice store opening, the buzz generated over Twitter and Facebook was nuts. The culmination of founders Edison and Kevin and Malaysia’s Edwin Choong (Sole What?) burgeoning friendship and shared interests, the stores opening was a big deal for 3 reasons: 1. the very guys that kickstarter the Hong Kong sreetwear scene, bad-boy Edison and Kevin were on hand to officiate; 2. suddenly we could getting our hands on previously hard to get streetwear labels; and 3. with Bangsar already a fashion hotspot for boutique trawling babes, finally it looks like the boys will be getting  their own back as streetwear and men’s fashion in particular makes in roads into the area.

Indonesian streetwear brands get Malaysian representation and prove a fierce creature.
An indie streetwear label for men first established in Bandung in 1999, Badger features retro-inspired design motifs with a strong graphic attitude. Its line of tees, jackets, sweatshirts and accessories have already found fans in Indo bands Nidji and Peter Pan and it was that same musical connection which attracted Malaysian’s Zai, Farid, Faezal and Izzat to form Badger Malaysia and open the country’s first store.

It’s not how big the store is, it’s what’s inside that matters
Super Sunday Store owners Kioue (pronounced Kayu) and Tha-B have been running The Super Sunday Store for almost 2 years, but their movement within the graffiti and t-shirt designs circles is closing in on the 4-year mark. Kioue and Tha-B are also active in the breakdancing scene as well as event management, so don’t be messin’ yo. Their store, located at the Bukit Bintang monorail station may be tiny but you can’t be mistaking that graffiti influence.

Taking your soles into another dimension.
Sole What? was created because they saw the stagnant progression in the streetwear scene. First opened in The Gardens, the store’s main principal was to bring in the unattainable locally. They cut the unnecessary process of bidding or waiting, making your life simpler to rock out your fave sneaks. Sole What? is the bridge between you and the gear of your choice. This streetwear store has definitely created a newfound awareness for sneakers, streetwear, accessories and the whole lifestyle.
