The latest in Converse’s Three Artistes, One Song series features an expected musically disparate trio; Frank Ocean, Diplo, and The Clash’s Mick Jones & Paul Simonon. But ‘Hero’ isn’t that strange of chimera, actually. While Frank Ocean and Diplo are known for being adventurous, The Clash was the first punk band to bring varied musical styles (as anchored by a singular genre name) to the mainstream — just listen to London Calling. Fittingly Diplo, responsible for bringing the band back to the mainstream by sampling ‘Straight to Hell’ on M.I.A’s ‘Paper Planes’, is the one to make the track cohesive. Amidst Frank Ocean’s emotive crooning, Diplo’s subtle electronic influence, the doo wop melody accompanying Mick Jones and Paul Simonon’s garage riffs, and the cliched children’s choir coda is an anodyne pop ditty made perfect for public consumption.
