Back in August, Gigi Hadid announced on Instagram that she would be walking the 2017 Victoria’s Secret (VS) show in Shanghai. “Forever and ever and ever a dream come true to be asked back to the VS Show!!!” Hadid captioned.  Well, it turns out the 22-year-old supermodel wouldn’t be able to make it to Shanghai, China for the show.

Most people speculated that she had problem with her visa, but citizens in China beg to differ. After the controversial ‘racist’ video of Hadid mocking Asian people sparked fury, most people there don’t want her to visit their country. Chinese internet users lashed out at Hadid after her sister Bella Hadid – who is walking the VS Fashion Show ’17 – posted an Instagram video in February showing Gigi squinting her eyes while holding up a Buddha-shaped cookie.

Hadid, who earned USD9 million just from modelling last year, has apologised on China’s Twitter-like Weibo on 1 September, declaring her “respect and love for the people of China” and swearing she meant no harm. Although some accepted her apology, many still don’t and even threaten to boycott Victoria’s Secret if Hadid appeared. Her dropping out of the show averts a potential PR disaster for the brand.

Although Gigi will not be attending, VS won’t have to worry as many other deserving models like Karlie Kloss, Martha Hunt, and more will be walking in the show. In fact, they are already on the way to Shanghai now. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air on 28 November.
